“Lake-loving is not an idle affair for someone who took so long achieving it… our inland sea is the only coast I need.”
– Rosellen Brown
Chicago is often synonymous with its biting winters. Regardless, Chicagoans enjoy themselves and their surroundings year-round. CITY 2000 photographers captured this resilient spirit. They found people swimming in Lake Michigan, attending street festivals, and playing chess at the parks. They played in neighborhood sports leagues, danced at concerts, sledded down neighborhood hills, and put on firework displays for the neighborhood kids. They roller skated, bird-watched, and played video games together. Through playfulness and shared experiences, they built a sense of community that endured throughout the changing seasons.
CITY 2000's photographers captured these moments with a keen eye, preserving the spirit of Chicagoans who, despite periodic environmental challenges, always found ways to enjoy themselves.
