How We Played
“Lake-loving is not an idle affair for someone who took so long achieving it… our inland sea is the only coast I need.”
– Rosellen Brown
Despite being known for harsh winters, Chicagoans enjoy themselves and their surroundings year-round. CITY2000 photographers found people swimming in Lake Michigan, attending street festivals, and playing chess at the parks. They played in neighborhood sports leagues, danced at concerts, sledded down neighborhood hills, and put on firework displays for the neighborhood kids. They roller skated, bird-watched, and played video games together. Chicagoans found community through their need for playfulness once winter finally ended and warm weather emerged.
