"But this is Chicago, where we can – and we do. After all, we know about autumn in March, spring in a blink, and the constant promise of summer."
– Achy Obejas
Chicagoans found simple joys in moments throughout their daily routines. It is these mundane moments that reveal the most about how Chicagoans lived. Admiring the skyline, scraping the snow off a car window, serving lunch trays at Cook County Jail, walking past a Blockbuster, or waiting for clothes to dry at a laundromat are moments that allow us to peer into the life of a Chicagoan in the year 2000. These experiences often go unnoticed, maybe overshadowed by the popularity of Wrigley Field, Millennium Park, or the noise of the El train ramps that rage overhead. CITY2000 photographers showed Chicagoans at their most authentic: when they simply live their day-to-day lives.
