Chicagoans found simple joys in moments throughout their daily routines. It is these mundane moments that reveal the most about how Chicagoans lived. Admiring the skyline, scraping the snow off a car window, serving lunch trays at Cook County Jail, walking past a Blockbuster, or waiting for clothes to dry at a laundromat are moments that allow us to peer into the life of a Chicagoan in the year 2000. These experiences often go unnoticed, maybe overshadowed by the popularity of Wrigley Field, Millennium Park, or the noise of the L train ramps that rage overhead. CITY2000 photographers showed Chicagoans at their most authentic: when they simply live their day-to-day lives.
